Desist from free trade says Sony

2005-06-04-psp.jpgSony has launched a new console called the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in the US and Japan. It is not going to release it in Europe until September. In the meantime, some retaillers in Europe have decided to "grey import" the product. This is good for consumers because it means they get access to the product earlier. Sony is not happy:

This PSPs parallel imports business has been taking place in England since the beginning of the year, and Sony decided to end these practices, which in the company's opinion, affect its interests and image.

Thus, all the shops selling PSPs, generally for 195 pounds, have received cease and desist-type letters from Sony, by means of which the company invoked trademark infringements and requested the immediate ceasing of all PSP selling activities.

Given that the consoles are the genuine product made by Sony, it's sad to see Sony claiming they violate trademarks. Preventing grey imports - whether in cars, pharmaceuticals or games consoles - is a way to rig markets against consumers.
